Contextualization
Who made the beauty standards? Was it the Europeans? Was it the Kardashians? Was it the New York Magazine? In this project, I reviewed how the beauty standards have evolved since Peter Paul Ruben in comparison to today's beauty standards reflected in the publics' eye.
Perspective
Trauma is, unfortunately, a normal occurrence, yet few of us know how to handle it. For this perspective-based project, I deep-dived into how we can define trauma from bad experiences and how you can cope with it.
Reasoning
Shockingly, of the 9000 freed African Americans in North Carolina in the early 19th century, 2%, or 180, of them were slaveowners. Among those, William Ellison was one of the most successful, so I investigated why he decided to become one along with understanding how he treated them.
Synthesis
In the movie Pocahontas, the character Pocahontas is actually voice acted by a white woman, Judy Kuhn. After this casting, there was no uproar and no upset. After Haille Bailey was cast as the Little Mermaid, there was a large controversy where some thought it was a misrepresentation of the original movie while others thought it was a great representation of diversity in Hollywood. So here’s a hypothetical: if Moana had a real-life version of the original movie, what would the public opinion be if the princess was white? And what if it was a black person portraying a Polynesian person? In different contexts and the same situation, does public opinion change? Does it matter?
